All Decked Out

Some people collect Christmas stories the way other people collect ornaments. Designer Paul Cooper, who decks out every last foot of his 1904 Queen Anne Revival in Hartford’s historic West End every year for the holidays, does both.

Here’s one for starters: Several years back, in the weeks before Christmas, Cooper found an Italian limited-edition nativity scene, carved by hand, in a New York showroom. It was the last set available, and he was excited to have it. But when he arrived home, he saw that the baby Jesus figurine was missing.

He called the company, which promised to have it delivered immediately. He waited and waited. Christmas Eve arrived. That night, with the sun moving beyond the horizon and Cooper’s hopes for his hand-carved baby Jesus statue fading with the light, the Federal Express truck pulled up. A box was delivered into Cooper’s hands. It was the baby Jesus, just in time for the birth.

Such stories still elicit a look of amazement from Cooper. Just as he is a connoisseur of all things Christmas, from fabric and figurines to ornaments and the occasional miracle, he is childlike too, filling Christmas with tradition and memory
