If you’re thinking of moving, consider the top ten neighborhoods in Connecticut which offers many solid family friendly neighborhoods, good schools and low crime.

Westport and Wilton are the homes to people who can be described as “urban sophisticates.” Being an “urban sophisticates” is about being educated and well-off financially. Urban sophisticates support bookstores, quality clothing stores, enjoy luxury travel and in Connecticut, they are truly the patrons of the arts.

Darien, is a small coastal town. New Canaan is a smaller town located in the state of Connecticut. Both have more artists, designers and people working in media than 90 of the communities in America. This concentration of artists helps shape both Darien’s’ and New Canaan’s character in Connecticut.

Easton and Ridgefield are good choices for families with children because of the town’s good public school district. In Easton, however, the average commute to work is quite long and on average people spend 35 minutes each day getting to work.

Roxbury and Redding are great places for families with children as they are both places where parents can find family-oriented services and community services.

Don’t forget the neighborhood of Greenwich. Greenwich is a neighborhood that has a large population of people who are young, single, educated, and upwardly-mobile. The town is nautical, somewhat historic and bounded by the ocean or tidal bodies of water. Such areas are places that visitors and locals go for waterfront activities or taking in the scenery.

When searching for home security systems, knowing what to look for is a must. That could be an alarm system that will let the home owner know when something is amiss, or it could be cameras that are strategically positioned to show what is happening around the home. No one wants to be caught off guard by unexpected visitors, especially in an unfamiliar location.

Moving to a new home in a different neighborhood, whether that neighborhood is across town or across country, feeling secure is always going to be an issue. While it does take time to get used to a new home, there is no need to add uncertainty about security to the mix. Choosing wisely when selecting security systems for the home will provide any home owner with the confidence they need to sleep soundly at night.

The excitement of relocating should not overshadow the benefits that can be derived from securing the home with a system that will alarm when intruders attempt to invade the inner sanctum of the home. Having a sense of security will always be preferable to the uncertainty that arises from the frightening experience of an actual break in or an attempted one.

If you haven’t yet experienced the natural beauty of Connecticut, you’re in luck: the Home Builders Association of Connecticut is ensuring that the state remains pristine for future generations. Founded in 1960, the HBACT has a lot of experience working with residential builders and suppliers, and their Build Green Connecticut initiative is helping those companies achieve a new level of environmental awareness. The Build Green Connecticut Program was the first state program to include an ANSI-certified building standard. ANSI (American National Standards Institute) accredits programs across the US. Connecticut’s program was also one of the first to formally partner with the National Association of Home Builders’ (NAHB) Green program.Working with a green building standard means working with the future in mind. Environmental homes take advantage of the special conditions of Connecticut’s location, whether it’s the humid climate or plentitude of state forests. Builders looking to learn more about the program can apply to the HBACT Green Homes Council, where builders and remodelers share information and experience. An 11-minute film on NAHB Green Certification is available online here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?vHf8xvxnQsGk. A “Green Scoring Tool” and certification guide are also available at the NAHB Green site.More information can also be found at several upcoming events, including a presentation at the Envirobuild Expo in Hartford this October, and a one-day course on green building standards in February 2011. If you’re not a builder but are in the market for a new home in Connecticut, be sure that you discuss these standards with your builder before you start. Wouldn’t you rather be a part of the solution, rather than just another part of the problem?

The rates of violent crime in Connecticut are well below the national median, clocking in at only 2.83 annual violent crimes per every 1000 residents. Across the country, the median rate is 4.7 per every 1000. When it comes to property crimes, though, the rates are almost ten times higher, with 26.37 property crimes per 1000. This doesn’t mean you should live in fear of a burglary, but there are a number of things you can do to protect your home.Securitech Systems is a Connecticut company founded in 2002 by high-end security professionals. Located in Newtown, they embrace their role as a smaller company and offer a start-to-end security experience, beginning with sending a technician to check out your home. That same technician will be the one to install the system if you decide to buy one.Securitech offers plenty of security options, from keypad monitoring systems to motion detectors. These systems are accessible off-site with a special watch or key-ring transmitter. If someone in your family has medical concerns, you might also be interested in purchasing a safety medical pendant, which supervises loved ones and can be a life-saver in the case of emergencies.Connecticut homeowners also have access to ADT’s nationwide acclaimed security coverage. At Security Choice (an ADT-authorized dealer), buyers can find deals in their area by clicking on their city or entering their zip code. ADT’s products include home security systems, personal emergency response systems (PERS), and Safewatch Videoview monitoring technology, which allows you to access home cameras online. The Safewatch QuickConnect package starts at the low price 299 for installation with a monthly monitoring fee of only 42.99 and includes all the basics, including a control panel, door and window sensors, a motion detector, a keychain remote, and more.

The housing market is on its way back up across Connecticut, which is good news for both first-time buyers and owners planning a move. The Warren Group CEO Timothy Warren says that the tax credits offered to buyers were a big encouragement to homebuyers. The numbers reflect people’s confidence: the median price for a one-family home was 8.1 higher this March than it was last year, and sales for one-family homes and condominiums each rose more than 20 (37 for homes and 34.4 for condos). If you’re looking to invest in a Connecticut home, now is a great time, and there are plenty of tools online to help you. The website CT Homebuyer is a Connecticut real estate brokerage which can give you information about the many neighborhoods in the state, and help you decide which one is right for you. CT Homebuyer (or another reputable Connecticut broker) will help you get pre-qualified by a bank, negotiate terms on your home, and close the deal.At RealtyQuest (headquartered in Darien, Connecticut), you can easily search for properties in both Fairfield County and Haven County. Searches are conducted based on minimum and maximum price, property type, and the number of bedrooms and bathrooms. You can also get in contact with one of RealtyQuest’s highly trained agents to further enhance your property search.Connecticut has plenty to offer prospective homeowners: beautiful vistas, lazy rivers, the home of Mark Twain, and more. With the expiration of the tax credit and increasing unemployment in some areas, the Connecticut market may not stay at this level for much longer, so if you’re interested, be sure to start the process now. RealtyQuest, CT Homebuyer, and many other organizations are eager to help.

For example, I bet you weren’t expecting a BBQ festival in New England, but the Blues, Views & BBQ Festival is coming September 24-26. Now in its third year, the event will feature music on Friday night by Blues Traveler along with a professional BBQ challenge and cooking demos. There’s even a Kids Q competition, where teams of 2-4 budding chefs team up to produce the tastiest burger, hot dog, and chicken. The Norwalk Oyster Festival is perhaps a little more expected, but should still be well worth the timeespecially considering it’s free. Musical entertainment was provided by Wang Chung, 10,000 Maniacs, Still Alive & Well, Pimpinella, and more, all of which are sure to get your feet moving. There’s also arts & crafts for sale along with international food vendors, vintage ships, and other exhibits honoring Connecticut’s illustrious marine past. This event will take place September 10 through September 12.Ornithologists will want to pull themselves away from the BBQ Fest on September 24-26 to check out the Great Stratford Bird Festival. Spanning the whole of the city’s downtown area, this event is the perfect way for families to learn more about the feathery companions who share their city. On the 25th James Prosek, a renowned naturalist and author, will be speaking about his relationship to nature and sharing his new book, which is actually on eels. Now you’ll have to come to find out the connection!Further in the future is the Harvest Festival, which takes place October 17 at the Stamford Museum & Nature Center. This annual seasonal celebration is always a hit with families, and features the classic hayride along with fresh apple cider and other tasty Halloween treats. Start marking your calendar now.

If you’re planning on buying a new home in Connecticut, choosing an internet service provider might not be your top priority, but it’s still an important decision to make. You need to trust your ISP to provide security for all of your most important data, whether it’s bank accounts or social security numbers. For the Connecticut resident, there are a variety of trusted companies in the state.Optimum Online (provided by Cablevision) provides high-speed cable broadband starting at 29.95 a month. That low price gets you speeds ranging up to 5x greater than internet through a phone company. For an extra 9.95 to your monthly bill, you can get Optimum Online Boost, with 30 Mbps downstream and 5 Mbps upstream as well as a professional set of web building tools.Verizon is another option for Connecticut consumers. The trusted telecommunications company offers a variety of internet options in the state, including their fiber-optic system (FiOs) network. For 89.99, you can hook up your TV, Internet, and phone (with unlimited calling to this network, or just get an internet plan starting at 49.99 a month. Of course, you can also still get Verizon High Speed Internetwith over 100 million users around the world, it’s not going anywhere anytime soon.CLEAR Internet will be launching in Hartford in the near future. This will let anyone with CLEAR access get online across the city. CLEAR is the developer behind the HTC Evo’s 4G network, so you know you’ll be getting fast (and reliable) coverage if you go with them. You might have to wait a little longer for the program to launch, but depending on your circumstances and location, it could be well worth the extra time. For more information on any of these providers, check out their respective websites.
