Connecticut’s top industries

Connecticut draws people from many different industries, but a few stand out in popularity compared to the rest. If you’re moving to the state for a reason other than a job transfer, consider directing your job inquiries to one of the following areas:AGRICULTUREConnecticut has a thriving agricultural scene, with the Connecticut Department of Agriculture responsible for inspections and regulations across the state. Tobacco and nursery plants are the primary produce of the state. There’s also a large market for shellfish, including lobsters, clams, and oysters, as well as cattle and dairy products.TRANSPORTATIONIndustrial factories in Connecticut produce equipment for a number of transportation branches, most of it non-automotive. Aircraft and helicopters account for the bulk of production, while some nuclear submarines are also made in the state. Connecticut actually has an official state aircraft, the F4U Corsair, and officially recognizes two CT aviation pioneers: Igor Sikorsky, who founded the Sikorksy Aircraft Corporation in Stratford in 1925, and Gustav Whitehead, who conducted research in powered flight in Bridgeport two years before the Wright brothers’ experiments at Kitty Hawk, North Carolina.PHARMACEUTICALSPharmaceutical companies regularly gain recognition in the state. For example, Connecticut Magazine named Alexion Pharmaceuticals, a global company concentrating on ultra-rare diseases, one of Connecticut’s Great Places to Work in 2010. ARTS, FILM, HISTORY & TOURISMIn 2006, a study found that this branch of industry provided 14 billion of activity and 170,000 jobs annually. Connecticut is a frequent spot for history buffs due to its status as the “Constitution State,” so named because of the adoption of the Fundamental Orders by the Connecticut Colony in 1638/39. Films with scenes shot in Connecticut include The Sisterhood of the Travelling Pants 2, The Ice Storm, Righteous Kill, Confessions of a Shopaholic, and Away We Go.For those looking for jobs in Connecticut, you may find it helpful to visit CTJobs.com, ConnecticutJobs.com, or the Connecticut government’s Department of Administrative Services Employment Connection page (for those interested in state jobs).
