Connecticut’s most popular–and populated–cities

Connecticut has a number of thriving big cities that are welcoming to newcomers. There’s something for everyone in these cities, and if you’re looking to move to Connecticut, we recommend starting your search here.1. Bridgeport: Bridgeport is much more than just the birthplace of P.T. Barnum. The Frisbie Pie Company and the Subway chain of restaurants both started here. The city continues to thrive after its long history, and has begun renovation of selected areas and protection of residential neighborhoods. A number of films have been shot in the city, which is also known for its music festivals, museums, and parks.2. New Haven: Founded in 1638, New Haven is laid out in a four-street-by-four-street grid known as the “Nine Square Plan.” New Haven Green, a National Historic Landmark and the city’s downtown center, sits in the middle of the grid. Besides being home to prestigious Yale University, the city also features a revitalized downtown area and 95 top Zagat-rated restaurants. It also “had the first public tree planting program in America” (Wikipedia).3. Hartford: Hartford’s population is variable and is sometimes given as higher than Stamford’s. The city is nicknamed the “Insurance Capital of the World” due to its chief industry. Trinity College, The University of Connecticut School of Business, and the Hartford Seminary are all located within the city. Expect to see Hartford’s national presence rising in the next few years.4. Stamford: Stamford experienced a boom in the 1960s and 1970s as New York City corporations relocated to the city’s attractive commercial real estate. The downtown area has continued to grow since thenliterally in some cases, thanks to structures like One Landmark Square (21 stories), the Trump Parc condominium tower (35 stories), and the upcoming Ritz-Carlton Hotel and Residences building (39 stories).5. Waterbury: This city earned the nickname the “Brass City” thanks to its early-20th-century industrial interests. Landmarks in the town include the Union Station Clocktower, the Municipal Stadium, the Apothecary Building, and the Hotel Elton.
